Reflections

IMG_7056

The linoleum rigid beneath my naked toes
bears little condolence in the long run.
For I require more than presence
to ease my jumbled mind.

The giant before me is unmasked,
its cloak tumbling towards the floor,
joining the crowd to watch my performance.
Just passersby of my cadence to life,
just readers of my stanza,
in no way are they instructors.

My fingers skate across the glass
and mine do too.
I hold my world in my hands
and so do I.
I dance and sing through the dust and sweat
just as I do.

Our lives collide
in mimicking gestures.
My reflection and I.
Me and my reflection.
We are one and the same
right?

Our synchronized movements
suggest we are one.
Our choreographed lives
represent our unity.
Our emotions chiseled into our bones
assume her thoughts are my thoughts.

The maelstrom of life coursing through my veins
and the
cold,
cracked,
lifeless,
glass of her body
suggests that this door is nothing but a mirror
reflecting only what we let others see
but never what we can see ourselves.

For I require more than presence
to ease my jumbled mind.

The Mind Sea

 IMG_5199

She stood quietly, motionless. Her entire life reeling through her mind.  Every mistake, every falter replaying again, and again. Everything came rushing in.

She was in her ship, safe and sound. Nothing could touch her, although, now she wasn’t so sure. She felt something was about to happen. Deep within her she knew, but her conscience refused to let her believe. Her mind began to flutter. Her senses had deserted her with the wind long ago. As the waves grew larger and larger, her sanity stumbled in the other direction.

Her boat had soon been penetrated; the water was quick to attack. Her own life was slowly being pulled away by her endless sea of thoughts. The water kept filling and filling until there was nothing left to fill. She was submerged. Her ship was sinking. She treaded and treaded but all she could do was drown.

Her mind became an entire ocean plagiarized with a life that was no longer her own. She listened and watched her memories roll past her with the waves. Every sentence she could hear seemed tainted with unrealistic lies and untruth.

Her throat began to burn. Her eyes began to sear. Her mind began to rot.

She struggled and she struggled against the waves. Her boat had disappeared completely. She was finally alone; just her and her thoughts.

The water thrashed and churned. Everything was a blur. The burning sensation had consumed her body. She tried so hard to rid herself of the water. She tried so hard to breathe, but her lungs could find only water. She screamed and she screamed, but nobody could hear. Her body became limp. Her muscles ached with pain and struggle. The fire was burning now more than ever. Her movement became scarce. She was paralyzed with pain.

In what was left of her mind she decided it was done. She had lost. She allowed this to happen. She let her boat sink.

Utilizing the minimal amount of brainpower she had in her, she allowed herself to sink, immersed in her own thoughts. People shouted towards her, called her a coward, a loser. They told her she was nothing, that she had no purpose, that she would be better of drowning in a lake where no one could find her body. At this point she found the reality strikingly funny in an ironic sort of way, although, her perception had been brutally mutilated since the last time she had been able to form a complete thought, only moments ago.

Everything about her was scorched; her mind, her soul, her body. It all hurt so much. Thoughts began to come in pieces. She could no longer form words. Her lips were frozen.

The roaring sea tore at her body. Everything started to move. The water swirled, beating her down with every last effort. The insults fired away like rockets, but she couldn’t understand them anymore. She was beaten, bruised, torn. The fire consuming her burned and burned and burned and suddenly….

Nothing.

Everything stopped.
She felt pressure upon her arms. The fire stopped burning. The water stopped swirling. The insults stopped coming. It was quiet. All she could hear was the wind howling against the leaves. She was lying on the ground. It was soft. It was comfortable.

Soon she heard something. It was unclear at first, but she was able to make out the breathing of another person. She wasn’t alone.

She tried to open her eyes, but the minute her eyelids lifted the burning returned with an abrupt force. She winced at the pain.

“Shhh” said the voice. “You’re alright. Everything is alright.”

The voice was calming, peaceful. She soon realized she was cradled within the arms of this person. His arms were warm and his breath was calming.

Her mind began to turn slowly, but surely. She started to piece together complete thoughts. She had so many questions, but at the moment, all she could focus on was that she was alive in the arms of this person.

Relief began to take control of her body. The pain had subsided. She was happy.

She finally opened her eyes, despite the intense pain it caused her. She gazed into the eyes of her savior. “Thank you.” She managed to say with her quiet, broken voice.

He responded with a smile and kindly stroked her hair in an attempt to assure that she remained calm.

In this time she began to recognize her surroundings and became aware of the fact that tears were streaming down her face. She also realized what she had to do, but she knew it could wait. At the moment all she wanted to do was lie in his arms and be thankful that he was there. He cradled her. After many minutes that felt like a lifetime, the woman fell asleep in the arms of the man. A single tear cascaded town the man’s face as he saw her sleep. Her face looked calm. She was no longer in pain. He knelt down and kissed her forehead and allowed her to sleep. To sleep for an eternity in his arms. Forever as one.

In that moment, his love for her became…

Infinite.

Just like the sea.

Infinitely strong.

Just like the mind.

Infinitely dangerous.

Just like the “harmless” insults.

Infinitely infinite.

Just like our mind.
